Gisèle Pape patiently studied the art of fugues and fifths at Belfort, on the Conservatory's organ, escaping into the forest whenever she could. However, she chose to study cinema at the Louis-Lumière Film School. There, she learnt how to create chemicals, develop film rolls and direct experimental movies. She took up the guitar and borrowed an analog synthesizer in order to make her own soundtracks. Then, she became a lighting technician, went on tour, recorded the birds in Brazil and the crowd in Hong Kong. Finally, she decided to become a singer. But not of any kind: she would sing fables, ritornellos, mixing Couperin's harmonies with Laurie Anderson's experimental sounds, or Steve Reich's minimalism with Cat Power's melodies. She then caught the attention of La Souterraine and Les Inrocks Lab Festival and released her first EP, Oiseau, at the end of 2016. Hundreds of concerts followed, from café-concerts to La Fête de l'Huma, including La Maroquinerie and Le Café de la Danse. In February 2020, Oiseau was re-edited with two bonus tracks, a way of closing a first chapter and opening a new one.
Caillou, her first album, will be released in 2021 and published by Finalistes. The dreamlike album takes you to a journey through wild open spaces, with an extra touch of electro. Just like the very first single Le Chant des Pistes, which was shot on the Vercors Massif and released at the end of November 2020.
